People are being warned of a scam email being sent claiming the bedroom tax has been abolished.
East Riding of Yorkshire Council has been made aware of the hoax email, which contains an attachment which people are asked to fill in with their personal details and return.
The spare room subsidy was introduced last year for social housing tenants with spare or unoccupied bedrooms at their homes.
It has not been abolished and people should ignore the email.
Councillor Margaret Chadwick, portfolio holder for council support services at East Riding of Yorkshire Council, said: “I would urge all residents to be vigilant as the claims that are being made in this email are false.
“Anyone who receives such an email should not open the attachment and should delete it.”
Anyone with any queries or concerns should contact East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s benefit section on (01482) 394799.
