It will be a sprint to the finish at the inaugural Malton Festival of Cycling on Sunday 22 June.

The day promises to be a cyclists’ dream, with numerous races being organised for different age groups, starting from under-8s through to elite riders, ensuring the Festival will have family appeal.

And it will be a fun atmosphere as there will be street food stalls near the Milton Rooms, while afternoon tea will be available at the Talbot Hotel in Yorkersgate.

Malton Festival of Cycling is sponsored by Malton CIC, Northern Ride, Superfast North Yorkshire, Swinton Technology, Crombie Wilkinson LLP, Northern Ride, Switched Electrical, Paul Waddington Flooring and the Talbot Hotel. The Festival itself has free entry and is open from 9am to 6pm.

One of the event organisers, Ash Clark, from Malton’s Northern Ride, explained: “This is the first Malton Festival of Cycling, which will hopefully be held on an annual basis.

“There is a large cycling community in the area, and while local riders are more than welcome, the races are open to all. We’ve had entries from cyclists in London, Edinburgh and other parts of the country. Race places can be booked through www.northernride.com

“We are also looking for volunteers to help with the event, as we are hoping there will be lots of visitors to the market town. It will definitely be a family-friendly occasion, during which people can enjoy Malton for the whole day.”

The routes will take cyclists around the historic streets of Malton, lasting from 15 minutes for younger participants, right through to challenging 45-minute stints for the more serious rider. Speeds of over 40 mph are expected in the elite criterium racing.

Ash continued: “We are keen to get across that this event will involve the whole community. The mixture of races – from grass-roots to elite – means there is something for everyone.”

Races yet to be confirmed include one for the area’s emergency services.

The emergency services will also be represented on the day with their promotional vehicles, along with the North Yorkshire County Council Road Safety team.

Local brewery Brass Castle has created a beer especially for the occasion, entitled Pot Belge.

There will be a rollapaluza, during which two riders ‘race’ against each other on fixed bikes, in aid of Yorkshire Air Ambulance.

Ash said: “We would like to thank all the sponsors for their support, without which this event would not take place. We would also like to thank Elvington Plant Hire, who will provide the barriers for the event, and Community Traffic Management Ltd, who will organise the traffic.”

Malton CIC was formed in 2011 to benefit the community in Malton, Norton and the surrounding area. Its official name is the Malton Amenity CIC.

As well as organising the highly successful Malton Food Lovers Festival, Malton CIC coordinates the Malton Monthly Food Market in the Milton Rooms, and provides free parking in Malton town centre.

Malton CIC is actively seeking partner organisations and individuals to help with fundraising and sponsorship to deliver community projects.
