Ex Beautiful South singer Paul Heaton gigging at Hutton Cranswick in bid to save traditional pubs
EX-BEAUTIFUL South singer Paul Heaton is getting on his bike and heading for Hutton Cranswick as part of a bid to help save the country's traditional pubs.
Paul is gearing up to embark on a 1,000 mile cycle tour of the country, stopping off at village pubs along the way to perform his music, including tracks from his new solo album and occasional items from his extensive back catalogue.
As part of the Pedals and Beer Pumps Tour he will be calling into the White Horse, on Main Street much to the delight of landlord Clive Tomlinson who said: "We are over the moon."
Mr Tomlinson said in the 23 years he has been landlord the pub has hosted well-known live music acts such as the Searchers and the Tremeloes.
But he said that was a decade ago, in what he describes as the "theatre-bar days", and while the pub still hosts around 12 live music acts a year this forthcoming gig is going to be something special. The aim of the tour is to not only promote green energy, such as pedal power, but to also raise the profile of traditional English pubs which have run into rough times in recent years.
While Mr Tomlinson is proud to be able to lay claim to the fact that the White Horse is still going strong, he said: "The pub industry has been suffering and Paul is trying to help landlords and raise awareness of the pub industry."
The Pedals and Beer Pumps Tour will begin with a quick half in The Rovers Return, in Manchester from which Paul will be followed by his band and touring team; possibly staying overnight in the places they encounter along the way.
Paul, who is also a former member of the Housemartins, said: "I'm looking forward to pedalling around the country to promote cycling and the British pub. Both are very close to my heart. I've been cycling all my life and the British pub has provided most of my favourite stop off points.
"It saddens me to hear about so many pubs closing on a weekly basis so I want to do all I can to get people back to their local."
Alan Canvess, chairman of the Hull and East Riding branch of the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA), has welcomed the news and believes the benefits of the tour will be three-fold.
"It's great for the regulars who use the pub, it's great for those who have never been before and it will be a chance for those who have not been to the pub for a while to go back and be reminded of what they are missing," he said.
"Paul is a musical talent and for somebody of that standing to be appearing at a village pub is marvellous," he added.
The 15-date tour includes venues in Cheshire, Warwickshire, Shropshire, London, Lincolnshire and of course Yorkshire.
Paul and his band will play the White Horse on May 20. Tickets are on sale now priced 15 available from.paulheatonmusic.co.uk or in person from the pub.
