Face of the Police Authority In East Riding
People in the East Riding of Yorkshire now have a dedicated Member of the Police Authority to turn to if they have concerns about the way in which policing is being delivered.
Cllr John Parsons, who is also Chair of the Authority's Finance Committee, has agreed to become the Authority's Lead Member for policing in East Riding. The aim is to offer people a point of contact if they have real concerns about local policing.
The Police Authority feels that it is important that local people can identify one Member who will represent their views when the Authority undertakes some of the most important parts of its role such as holding the Chief Constable to account for police performance, setting the police budget and agreeing the priorities for the Force.
This local representative will be of even greater value to local people as policing, like all public sector organisations, faces an unprecedented financial challenge, which may have a negative impact on public confidence. In addition, there is uncertainty around the proposals for significant change in governance and accountability arrangements that have been announced by the Government.
To make sure that the needs of different local communities are being met, the Police Authority has selected a high profile locally elected Councillor Member for each policing division and for East Riding this is Cllr John Parsons.
The Chairman of the Police Authority, Cllr Chris Matthews, explained: "The Authority needs to be easily accessible to local residents, particularly in this time of change. That's why I want to make sure that if you are unhappy with the police service that is being delivered in East Riding or you have strong views about how policing could be improved, you can turn to somebody who knows the area and can bring concerns back into the Authority.
"John is well known in the area and is a Councillor Member of the Authority, therefore he is easy to contact and has excellent local knowledge. We hope people will welcome this opportunity and help us develop our links with local communities so that we can ensure the quality of policing continually improves."
Cllr Parsons added: "This is a really positive step and brings the Police Authority closer to the people it is here to represent. The whole point is that I know the area, the issues and have excellent local contacts. We would like to know when things are going well and not so well, so that we can learn from this. We are also keen to hear from you about how you want policing to change, so I hope people will get in touch."
