Fall in fly-tipping cases revealed
DEFRA said this week that fly-tipping in England has dropped by 7.5 percent in a year.
As well as fly-tipping decreasing overall, enforcement action and successful prosecutions for fly-tipping has increased on previous years.
Key findings in the Yorkshire and Humber region have found that fly-tipping in the Yorkshire and Humber region costs local authorities nearly 6.9 million per year.
108,500 incidents were dealt with by local authorities in the region and 68 per cent of incidents involved household waste.
The Countryside Alliance's regional director, Richard Dodd, said "Fly-tipping is not a victimless crime.
"Most people fly-tip to avoid paying the disposal fee or landfill tax, but the Countryside Alliance 'Fly-tipping – Scrap it!' campaign has shown people that the penalties, which can be anything up to a 50,000 fine, six months imprisonment, or worse if the case goes to Crown Court, mean councils are serious about stopping criminals that fly-tip.
"We are happy to see a 7.5 per cent drop in fly-tipping activity this year, and look forward to seeing a further decrease next."
