FLEMINGATE WORK STARTS SOON
FLEMINGATE AERIAL VIEW
TENDERS have been invited for the first phase of the main construction contract on the commercial element of the Flemingate regeneration project in Beverley.
Following the completion of the site’s remediation late last year, the tendering process for the construction works has begun and with submissions expected to be with the developers soon, work is scheduled to start in the final quarter of this year.
The contract for the main access road to the commercial development has recently been let to local contractor C R Reynolds.
The mixed use retail, leisure and commercial scheme will be the largest development of its kind in the town, creating an estimated 300 new jobs during construction and more than 700 permanent jobs once the scheme is complete.
Despite the difficult economic conditions, interest in the Flemingate development from the UK’s retail sector has been very good, especially since the granting of detailed planning consent by the East Riding of Yorkshire Council last summer.
That followed the announcement that Debenhams is to be the anchor retailer at Flemingate with a 40,000 sq. ft. unit. Premier Inn will be operating an 80-bed hotel on the site and a new multi-screen cinema complex is also to be operated by Parkway Cinemas.
The commercial area is being developed by Hull-based Wykeland Group and Quintain Estates and Development PLC, of London.
Wykeland’s managing director, Dominic Gibbons, said: “After a planning process that has taken more than seven years to successfully complete, we are now entering a very exciting phase in the development.
“The residential part of the scheme has progressed extremely well and the level of retailer and operator interest is very positive with a number of further transactions now in solicitors’ hands”.
