Gran Jean honoured for 25 years
A SCHOOL cleaner from Driffield has been honoured for 25 years of service to the town infant school which her children and grand-daughter have both attended.
And Jean Walton has no intention of hanging up her mop and bucket after she received a long service award at the town's CE Infant School.
Jean, whose grand-daughter Abbie is in the reception year at the school on St John's Road, was presented with a certificate and two paintings provided by the East Riding of Yorkshire Council at a ceremony held at the school before the end of the summer term.
She said she had told the school about her length of service, adding that it had been "really nice" to be honoured.
Jean, 56, began working at the school back in 1985 after hearing the job was available in the school playground.
She said she had been standing in the playground when a member of staff asked if anyone was interested in a cleaning job at the school.
"My sister said, 'You go for it'", she said.
Current school headteacher Janet Spencer said Jean has become an integral part of the school community over the years.
"Her own children came here and her grandchild is here", she said.
And Mrs Spencer said one of her traditions was to see some of the youngsters off at the end of each day.
"As the Reception children are leaving, she stands and says bye to them."
