Local outlet shopping village, Hornsea Freeport, has stepped in to save the day for the Samaritan’s Purse annual Operation Christmas Child appeal. Offering up one of the centre’s spare units, Hornsea Freeport invited the charity group to run its shoebox collection from the centre after it was unable to acquire its usual warehouse in Hull City Centre.

Samaritan’s Purse is an international relief and development organisation that operates in 18 countries across Africa, Eastern Europe and Central Asia. This year, the charity was collecting shoe boxes to send to children living in the Chernobyl fall-out zone near Belarus, asking donators to fill the shoeboxes with toiletries, stationery and toys.

A phenomenal 5,500 boxes were amassed this year from the Hull and East Riding area, an outstanding success, as Kathy Webb, East Yorkshire area co-ordinator for Operation Christmas Child, explains:

“We are extremely grateful that Hornsea Freeport has helped the scheme out in such a fantastic way, as, without them, this year’s collection would have been a real struggle. Thanks to all the wonderful donations from some very generous people, children in Belarus who may not normally receive a Christmas present will this year have something to open and enjoy.”

Simon Tudor, centre manager at Hornsea Freeport said:

“We’re always happy to help charity groups such as Samaritan’s Purse in any way that we can and, especially at this time of the year, it’s very important to be able to give something back to those less fortunate than ourselves. We’re delighted that the charity has done so well this year and it’s fantastic that so many people have been willing to take the time and effort to put together a really lovely shoebox for a child in Belarus.”

All 5,500 shoeboxes were taken down to Dover in a lorry late last week and will be arriving in Belarus in time for Christmas Day. Shoeboxes can also still be donated at any ShoeZone store up to the week before Christmas.

Hornsea Freeport has an extensive range of factory outlet stores offering up to 50 per cent off brands including The Gift Company, Tefal, Craghoppers, The Works and Thorntons.

With places to eat and drink, children’s entertainment and its prime location close to the beach and many east coast attractions, Hornsea Freeport is an ideal destination for a great day out.
