Hunt for station graffiti vandal

POLICE are appealing for information following a graffiti attack at Driffield railway station which has caused £1,000 of damage.

Silver and black paint was daubed on the walls and seats on the platform at around 3am on Sunday and police are searching for the vandal responsible.

British Transport Police said they will not tolerate this type of offence and said such incidents can make train travel unpleasant for many people.

""Graffiti is viewed as trivial by some, but BTP treat these offences as a serious matter and we will not tolerate it.

"Graffiti is not only criminal damage but is also a form of pollution, an attack on the environment, and can lead to a climate of fear for passengers travelling on the rail network and those who live in the station vicinity.

"Network Rail and the train operating companies spend thousands of pounds a year cleaning off spray paint and repairing the damage caused across the area."

PC Ian Land, of the BTP, said the design of the graffiti - which depicts an angel - was distinctive and would be removed as soon as possible.

The incident was reported to police at around 9.10am on Monday when the ticket office opened.

Transport police are looking at CCTV images and are appealing for information about a male suspect who was seen in the area. He was wearing beige clothing and white trainers.

The spokesperson added: ""British Transport Police work hard alongside our partner agencies and the public to identify, arrest and convict any vandals taking part in such activities.

"We want to see Driffield station free from graffiti and vandalism and would like to appeal to the public to report anything suspicious they may have seen to BTP on freefone 0800 405040 quoting incident number 103 26th November to ensure that it remains the case."
