In response to the very successful summer Sensational Saturday Maker Markets held on Cross Hill car park, the Driffield Town Team are organising two indoor maker markets on Saturday October 19 and Saturday November 16 from 9am to 2pm in the Old Town Hall.
The town council had agreed not to stage any further maker markets in October and November due to concerns over bad weather.
Then local hoteliers, George and Rita Riggs offered the indoor option of the Old Town Hall on exchange Street.
Town Clerk, Claire Binnington, said: “The Sensational Saturdays on Cross Hill were such a phenomenal success the Town Council had wanted to end on a ‘high’ and leaving a positive end ready to re-launch in April 2014, as they feared poor weather in October and November may see the markets diminish in traders and visitors. However, they and the Town Team are delighted to accept George and Rita Riggs offer to stage the autumn markets indoors at the Old Town Hall”.
Partnership Officer, Helena Moss said: “The decision not to stage the markets in October and November, while understandable, was met with great disappointment by the traders and this is a fantastic opportunity to trade in the run up to Christmas. We can offer 30 spaces over two floors at the Old Town Hall and traders will be encouraged to continue the ethos of the Sensational Saturday markets offering locally produced food, hand crafted items, speciality gifts and artisan goods”.
Hotelier, Mrs Rita Riggs said: “I think everyone has found the Sensational Saturday markets have made a real difference to the trade on Saturdays and we think they have been very successful. It is great to be able to ensure the marker markets can continue indoors and we look forward to welcoming traders and visitors alike to the Old Town Hall in October and November”.
The Mayor, Coun Heather Venter said “We would like to thank George and Rita at The Bell Hotel, for this very kind gesture, this is a great example of how volunteer groups and businesses in the town can really work together for the common good to ensure our continued economic vitality”.
