Judges were “staggered” by the high quality of talent displayed by the region’s primary school children when assessing paintings for the 19th Walker Morris Children’s Charity Calendar Competition.
Three judges, comprising internationally renowned Yorkshire artist, Ashley Jackson, Dean Poole from West Yorkshire Printing and David Smedley, partner at law firm Walker Morris, chose the winners and runners up from over 1,500 entries. The 13 winners, including the coveted front-page prize, will each receive a hamper of art materials and a cheque for £250 for their schools. 37 runners-up will also receive a prize. The winners will be notified later this month.
The competition, which is open to all 5-11 year olds from the Yorkshire and Humberside regions, required the children to paint pictures that depicted their favourite month of the year. Winning entries will be used to produce a charity calendar, sold in aid of Yorkshire’s Martin House Children’s Hospice.
Ashley Jackson commented:
“The Walker Morris Calendar has finally come of age as it enters its 19h year I feel like a proud parent having been a judge on the competition throughout all the years. The longevity of the Calendar is in no small part down to the commitment of Walker Morris, the school teachers and to the child who submits their painting. I wish to thank you all, for without you there would be no competition.
“Each year I have approached the competition with excitement and promise, for the level of talent produced never fails to amaze me.”
David Smedley said:
“Yorkshire should certainly be proud of its young artists. Seeing the paintings and creativity from the region’s primary school children each year is always a delight. The judging is always incredibly difficult and I have to thank Ashley and Dean for all their help and advice. I’d also like to thank the pupils and teachers for supporting the Calendar. Since the competition’s inception in 1993, Walker Morris has raised over £60,000 for Martin House Children’s Hospice.”
The presentation of the prizes will take place at a special award ceremony held at Walker Morris offices on Saturday 9th November and will be attended by the winners, runners-up and their families.
