Knitting bridges generation gap

THE revival of knitting is helping to bridge several generation gaps in Hutton Cranswick.

Village Brownies are being taught the art at the same time as forging new friendships with women who are a dab hand with a pair of knitting needles.

The Brownies, who are aged between seven and nine, have been attending classes at their weekly meetings run by members of the Women’s Institute.

The initiative was dreamed up by WI member Margaret Dodds and Brown Owl Kathrine Adams.

Now around 14 members of the WI are giving their time and wool to pass on their knitting skills to the younger generation.

Mrs Dodds, who also runs regular craft evenings at the WI Hall in Hutton Cranswick, said the WI members had really enjoyed spending time with the Brownies and hoped to return to develop their skills further.

She said: “Children are missing out at school but we were all taught at school so that was behind the idea. They have really enjoyed themselves and are really interested. And we enjoyed teaching them.

“The women and children seem to communicate very well between themselves.”

Lead by Brown Owl Kathrine Adams, Tawny Owl Jenni Johnson and Snowy Owl the Rev Ruth Hind, the Brownies have starting with the basic plain knitting.

Many of the 20 Brownies intend to use their new skills to knit a scarf.
