Lighting up to spread message on smoking

VISITORS to this week's Driffield bonfire and firework celebrations were treated to an unusual sight as the fire goes up in flames.

That is because staff from the Hull and East Riding Stop Smoking Service were launching their tenth anniversary celebrations at Saturday night's event at the town's rugby club.

Large mock cigarette packets were be placed on top of the bonfire to highlight the work the service has done to help thousands of people kick the habit over the past decade and to encourage others to quit.

Service manager Maxine Wrightson said: "This November we are lighting up for a positive reason.

"Since the service started we have successfully helped more than 17,000 people quit smoking.

"While this is a fantastic achievement, there are still 83,000 people smoking in the East Riding and Hull so our work is by no means done.

"We will be running a series of events and activities over the coming weeks to help spread the message and encourage those considering stopping to get in touch."
