Willerby based North Yorkshire and Humber Commissioning Support Unit (NYHCSU), celebrates one year in business this week.
The organisation was created as a result of changes to the way NHS services are commissioned and today employs 380 people serving a geographical reach of 4500 square miles. Providing business and management services to the health and social care sector, NYHCSU has been a vital partner in the development of eight Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs) across North Yorkshire and the Humber.
Highlights of the NYHCSU year include the development of a framework for the adoption of National and NICE standards to improve service standards for patients with dementia, the delivery of quality assured training packages in the safe handling of medicines in social care settings and the creation of an innovative child safeguarding mobile app, unique to the region and new to the NHS.
Looking ahead, the CSU remains ambitious. Among key initiatives for the 2014 /15 year will be the work the CSU does on complex projects such as the £3.8bn Better Care Fund, helping local authorities and CCGs work together to make crucial savings in adult social care without compromising quality of service. In addition, this work will help patients avoid unnecessary hospital admissions by bringing the support they need closer to hand.
Further focus on patients comes from the CSU’s support for GP clinical research projects, enabling professionals in primary care to build on their first-hand knowledge of patient needs.
The CSU has played a part in the community over the past year, with staff adopting two charities, Macmillan Cancer Support and When You Wish Upon a Star, for whom they have raised over £5000.
NYHCSU Managing Director Maddy Ruff commented:
“Our first year has been challenging, rewarding and successful. Our customers value what we do, but we know we can do more and do it better still. We are competing for a place on the new NHS Lead Provider Framework which will bring opportunities for us to grow our business outside our established geographical heartland.
We have a superb workforce and great facilities at our three offices in the region. Everything is in place to take us forward with confidence.”
