People living in and around the Beverley area are set to benefit from the extension to the opening hours of the existing minor injuries service at East Riding Community Hospital to include weekends and Bank Holidays over the winter period.

The Minor Injuries Unit (operated by Hull and East Yorkshire Hospitals) currently opens Monday to Friday from 9 to 5 but growing numbers of patients have been attending the hospital on a weekend seeking treatment.

Humber NHS Foundation Trust (which owns the hospital) has been working with NHS East Riding of Yorkshire Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) to provide additional community nursing staff. This will mean the MIU can open 9 to 6 on Saturdays, Sundays and Bank Holidays (apart from Christmas Day) for a six month period. It is hoped this will help people avoid making unnecessary visits to Accident and Emergency, especially during the busy winter months

“A significant number of people tend to arrive at the hospital outside of normal hours, without an appointment, expecting to find the Minor Injuries Unit open,” explained Angie Mason, Deputy Chief Executive and Director of Nursing for Humber NHS Foundation Trust.

“When staff with the right clinical skills have been available, the GP Out of Hours Service also based at the hospital has been able to treat many of these “walk in” patients with minor injuries on a weekend rather than simply redirecting people to other MIUs or to Accident and Emergency in Hull. The addition of an extra advanced nurse practitioner and a support worker will help them provide a full minor injuries service, particularly over the busy winter period.”

Dr Gina Palumbo, local GP and Chair of East Riding of Yorkshire CCG added:

“The cold weather puts increased pressure on our healthcare system, and it is vital that local services work together during this busy period.

“We hope that local people will welcome the news that the East Riding Community Hospital will continue to provide treatment for minor injuries from experienced clinicians during the evening, weekends and bank holidays, where there is a recognised demand for the service.”

The Minor Injury Unit will operate from 9am to 6pm on Saturdays, Sundays and Bank Holidays – apart from 25/12/13 (Christmas Day). If you are taken ill or suffer a minor injury outside of these hours and your condition is not a life threatening (999) emergency we would always recommend that you call NHS 111 for medical advice in the first instance.
