A funeral service was held at the East Riding Crematorium on Monday, 28 July for Mr Charles Williams of Greenways, Driffield, who died suddenly on Wednesday, 16 July due to a tragic accident. He was 70.

The service was conducted by Colin Nolan.

Charlie was born in Driffield in February, 1944 and he lived there all his life. He attended Driffield Infants school and then to Bridlington Grammar School. He was very sporty whilst at school playing football and cricket which continued into adulthood, playing cricket for Driffield and football for Beswick, Bainton and Driffield. After leaving school in 1960 Charlie commenced an apprenticeship to become an electrician with G A Jefferson & son in Driffield and after successfully completing his apprenticeship he stayed with them until 1994 having received his gold watch on 25 years employment. He later worked for Featherstone Electrical and in 2001 went to work at Bradshaws as their Maintenance Electrician, working for them until 2007 when he was forced to retire due to ill health.

He met his wife Sue at a local dance and they married at Bainton Church on the 6th June, 1970. They moved into their new home in Greenways and have lived there happily ever since.

They went on to have two children Karen and Paul. They enjoyed many family holidays in Paignton in Devon, Weston Super Mare and Morecambe, later walking in the Yorkshire Dales and the Peak District and Scotland.

Charlie enjoyed his retirement, he maintained a wonderful garden, he had city breaks and many holidays with Sue, including Italy and numerous trips to Malta and in June this year they enjoyed a fortnight in Croatia.

His keen interest was in railways which he discovered as a child, he started off as a train spotter and later with railway photography, he was also a member of the Driffield & East Yorkshire Railway Society, as well as many others, and often presented slide shows to his fellow members, he served on their committee and attended all the monthly meetings and chartered rail tours all over the UK.

Charlie was very family orientated, he was very proud of them and their achievments and his granddaughter Ellie was the apple of his eye.

Charlie was an honest, hardworking and loyal family man, he was a true gentleman and he will be greatly missed.
