Never a quiet time for the Tidy Team
Clock ps1116-20a Tidy Team Fixing the Millenium Clock
Over the last couple of weeks we have noticed questions have been raised as to the work of the Tidy Team and exactly what their purpose is, and what work they carry out.
There has been a Tidy Team in Driffield since 1994, when the then members of the town council decided they wished to provide additional services to those of the East Riding of Yorkshire Council.
As we have extended our services so too has the role of the Tidy Team. Their work varies by season, however there are some duties that are daily, including checking and maintaining St Margaret’s Close Play Area.
The Town Council provide 44 additional litter bins around the town and these are emptied three times weekly, the team set up the weekly market, provide continual maintenance at the allotments, the public conveniences, and as explained in an earlier column, they do clear the beck on a regular basis, complementing the clearance service provided by the ERYC.
In the summer on top of these duties, they prepare various bedding schemes, water the hanging baskets, grass cut the parish paths and other grassed areas the town council are responsible for, such as the allotments and the park.
They also carry out refurbishment of the street furniture and bus shelters on an annual rolling programme.
In the autumn they begin designing and preparing the Bonfire and Firework display as well as building the bonfire.
As winter approaches they prepare the Christmas lights, then erect and take them down.
We have been lucky so far this year not to experience any severe weather, but when we do, they are gritting our pavements and filling our salt boxes as part of our additional services to the ERYC.
They are very involved in various events including the Late Night Shopping and Driffield Show.
I can assure all parishioners that the Tidy Team are never ‘twiddling their thumbs’ and each day will bring a new job or challenge that requires immediate attention.
The Town Council have often looked at the possibility of contracting out some of the duties, but it has always proved cheaper to retain the Tidy Team as they present such good value for money.
Finally, can I just add, that I inspect their work boots before they purchase new ones, and believe me, they are needed!
