A funeral service was held at the East Riding Crematorium on Monday, 10 September for Mr Leslie Frank who died peacefully on the 16 September. He was 93.
The service was conducted By the Rev Stuart Grant and the organist was Mr Peter Maw.
Leslie was born in Trimdon, Co Durham on 11th August, 1920. He was the second of 5 children. He passed his 11+ and attended the grammar school. He did well but had to leave at the age of 16 to support his family. He began by going down the pit but the work did not suit him. He soon got an apprenticeship as a bricklayer and worked in the building trade for the rest of his career.
In 1939 he volunteered for active service. He spent the war as an aircraft engineer, he repaired planes and travelled all over the world but spent four years in the desert in Egypt.
Before the war one of his sisters had married Jim Fleetham and lived in Driffield, after the war he met and married Kathleen Fleetham and they remained in Driffield. They went on to have two daughters Vivienne and Jane.
Leslie continued to work in the building trade but they took over the Downe Arms in Little Driffield and ran this until 1964. They then moved to St John’s Road and he began work as Clerk of Works, he then became building control officer and was based at Westgarth. He was very well known in the town because of the pub and his work.
After retirement they moved to live in Cranswick. He enjoyed playing golf and was one of the founders of the Cranswick Bowls Club which he gave a great deal of his time and expertise to and he enjoyed many happy hours playing bowls with Kathleen.
Leslie and Kathleen were married for 51 very happy years until she died in 1999. He moved into Taylor’s Field in 2004 and then moved to Riverhead Hall in 2010 and he was very happy there.
He was a great family man and very much loved by them and will be greatly missed.
