in memoriam

in memoriam

A funeral service was held at All Saints Church, Nafferton on Tuesday, 17th December for Mrs Laura Greenlaw of Eastlands, Nafferton who died peacefully on 9th December following a long illness. She was 82. The service was conducted by the Rev Jean Artley & the organist was Mr Steven Westaway.

Laura was born in Langtoft, Nr Driffield on 12th February, 1931 and lived there until her late teens when she went to live in Nafferton with her mum and dad. She attended St Dominics Convent School in Bridlington. On leaving school she worked at Sugar Mills where she made many lifelong friends. During this time she met her husband to be Archie who lived in Nafferton. They had been together for over 62 years and would have celebrated their Diamond Wedding Anniversary in July next year.

During her working life she worked for Dewhirst’s from home making shirts so she could still look after Sue and Michael. She also worked for the Nut Factory in Nafferton, again making lot of friends, Hazel Hornsey being one of them who also became a good next door neighbour for 40 years with never a cross word. She then worked in hospital laundries at Northfield and Alfred Bean in Driffield and when they closed down transferred to Bridlington Hospital until her retirement aged 70 years. During these years she also took a big part in helping her daughter Sue bring up her grandchildren. She was a fantastic cook and for many years cooked a meal at home for Archie and his Darts colleagues at the end of the Darts season.

She was a remarkable unassuming, kind, hardworking woman, a loving wife, mother, nana and great nana who spent every Christmas for the last 33 years with her family.

She will be greatly missed by her family and friends.
