PCC to recruit new chief executive

Humberside Police Crime Commissioner Matthew Grove is to recruit a new Chief Executive for his office after the current post holder, Kevin Sharp, announced he is to retire in April.

Mr Sharp held the same role at the former Humberside Police Authority since 2008 and transferred to the Commissioner following his election in 2012.

By law, all Police and Crime Commissioners must appoint a Chief Executive, who also acts as monitoring officer to support and advise the Commissioner in developing and delivering his strategic objectives, and complying with his statutory duties and responsibilities, they are also responsible for the management of the Commissioner’s office and staff.

The appointment, which must be non-political and will be reviewed by the Police and Crime Panel, carries a salary of circa £80,000 per year and has a closing date of 27th January.

Mr Grove said: “Since my election in November 2012 it has been a very exciting, challenging and demanding journey. I have had to make significant decisions including appointing a new Chief Constable, publishing my Police and Crime Plan, working on regional collaboration with my neighbouring PCC’s and allocating grants to our crime and justice partners.

All of this was achieved at the same time as having to transform the governance of policing and develop arrangements with local partners and the public. This pace of change could not have been achieved so successfully without the support of my Chief Executive, Kevin Sharp. He enabled a smooth transition from the former Police Authority governance arrangements and worked tirelessly to support me in developing the new direction and different ways of working.

Now that we have a stable platform upon which to build further improvements, Kevin has decided that after having worked in the policing sector for 38 years, it is the right time for him to retire. Although he will be missed, this presents an opportunity to find someone who cannot only rise to the challenges we will inevitably face, but also maybe bring new ideas, skills or experience to the team. I am flexible on whether this a secondment or as a permanent member of staff. It is a complex role, and I am delighted Kevin will be here to oversee the recruitment of his successor and guide them through their first few weeks in the job.”
