Police claim success in fight against the troublemakers

RECORDED incidents of anti-social behaviour in two Driffield streets have fallen to almost zero, according to latest figures.

But police chiefs have pledged to remain vigilant against the problem in the George Street and Scarborough Road areas of the town.

And Sgt Dave Jenkins, of the Driffield Neighbourhood Policing Team, warned the area’s partners community forum that the problem is never likely to be fully solved.

He said: “I think we have made significant inroads into dealing with anti-social behaviour, both in the villages and in Driffield.

“I don’t think it will ever be eradicated, but we are on top of it more than we have been.”

The meeting was told that there had only been one call reporting anti-social behaviour in George Street since the forum last met in December.

And there had been no calls at all relating to the problem in Scarborough Road, the meeting at the town’s Access Centre heard.

Both areas were listed as priority issues for the Driffield Neighbourhood Policing Team at the forum’s last meeting.

But Sgt Jenkins said they were aware of instances of young people hanging around outside the town’s Tesco store.

“It’s the usual moth and flame scenario. It’s a case of keeping a lid on them and working out who’s who”, he said.

The meeting was also told that young people responsible for a wave of anti-social behaviour in Brandesburton have also been targeted by a police clampdown.

Warning letters were sent to the parents of those responsible for the disorder following a series of high visibility and plain clothes patrols in the area.

Sgt Jenkins said: “It has been very quiet in Brandesburton since then and hopefully it will stay that way.”
