Rallying round for charities
ORGANISERS of the annual Driffield Steam and Vintage Rally are pictured above handing over donations totalling thousands of pounds to a host of worthy causes.
About 10,000 was raised for charity during the rally held on the Driffield Showground last August, including almost 2,000 during the traditional road run through the town centre.
And half of that total, 5,000, was shared between eight charities and presented by officials of the East Riding Engine Club, which stages the rally each August, at their first social evening of the new year, held at the Blue Bell, Riverhead.
Traditionally, the club makes donations to four charities from the proceeds of the rally – Yorkshire Cancer Research, St John’s Ambulance, the Police Benevolent Fund and the Fire Service.
But this time around, donations were also made to the Nafferton Millennium Committee, which helps with car parking at the event, Macmillan Nurses, the British Heart Foundation and Kirkburn Church.
Club chairman Harold Bell thanked all the charities which help to ensure the rally can be staged each year and the Blue Bell for its continuing support of the club. The presentations of the cheques were made to officials of the chosen charities by club president Mike Middlewood.
This year’s rally, the 21st to be organised by the club, will take place over the weekend of August 14 and 15.
