Residents helping to fight crime
POLICE in Driffield are hoping the vital intelligence and local knowledge provided by the public can double their success rate in tracking down offenders.
This week the Home Office launched a Justice Seen, Justice Done campaign which will run until December 18 with the aim of highlighting the work being undertaken to bring offenders to justice through high-visibility policing and by tackling community issues.
Police officers will be on patrol in Driffield and tackling issues brought to their attention by members of the community.
PC Steve Wilson said: “With the vital intelligence provided by members of the public and by using residents’ local knowledge, our success rate can double.
“If you see anything suspicious in your area, I would urge you to contact the police.
“However insignificant you might think it is, it could help us locate a possible ongoing crime or suspect.”
Last Monday and Tuesday, a number of incidents took place in the Driffield area which, thanks to the help of the public, led to a suspect being identified.
Two youths were arrested in connection with an alleged burglary in Nafferton in the early hours of last Sunday morning.
At 3.40am the occupant of a house on Priestgate was awoken by sounds coming from her garden and called the police.
The two youths were arrested in connection with an alleged burglary of a shed. One of them, an 18-year-old local, was cautioned and the stolen property was returned to its owner.
A man was issued with an 80 Fixed Penalty Notice for disorder after police were called to a report of alleged criminal damage on Star Hill Road, Driffield, shortly after 1pm last Monday. Shortly before 1.30pm a 48-year-old local man was arrested.
A suspicious vehicle was seized by police last Monday after it was spotted in the Driffield area.
The van was seen at 1.10pm, followed by police officers and stopped in Beverley town centre.
Police have thank all the witnesses who came forward with information about the three crimes.
Anyone who wishes to contact the police is asked to phone 0845 6060222 or visit the police station on Wansford Road, Driffield.
