School gets a big tick from Ofsted

SCHOOL leaders in a village near Driffield have welcomed the findings of their latest inspection report.

Garton on the Wolds CE Primary School was rated as good following a visit by Ofsted inspectors.

And head inspector Lesley Clark reported: “In this school, pupils clearly come first. They receive a good all-round education.”

School headteacher Debbie Chadwick said: “I’m very happy with the result and I do feel the report gives an excellent view of the school.”

The report said pupils made good academic progress because they were “well taught” and standards in English, maths and science were above average at the end of Year Six.

However, the inspectors added that most progress was made in Key Stage Two and expectations of what more gifted pupils could do at Key Stage One should be raised.

Early years provision was said to be satisfactory but was developing rapidly to meet the needs of growing numbers of children of nursery age.

Links with both local and global communities were also praised, although the report said youngsters’ understanding of social and cultural diversity within Britain was more limited.

But Mrs Chadwick said the school was hoping to establish links with an inner-city school in the Bradford area in the near future and would be visiting a mosque in the city during the summer term.

Overall, the school was rated as good in 20 of the 28 assessment criteria and outstanding in three, including leadership and management, developing skills which would contribute to pupils’ future well-being such as attendance, and adopting healthy lifestyles.

The report further praised pupils’ attendance and punctuality and said they knew how to behave safely and responsibly in school.

The report added that children were sure there were no problems with bullying as they had helped to formulate the school’s behaviour policy, which is reviewed annually.

And Mrs Chadwick was particularly pleased that the school’s commitment to healthy living had been recognised, adding: “That is central in our school.”
