Sibling row led to court case

AN ARGUMENT which broke out between a brother and sister opposite a village fish and chip shop has landed a man in court.

Steven Alan Archer, 36, of Main Street, Beeford was seen chasing his sister on foot around her car after they started arguing.

Archer then swore at the chip shop manager across the road in Beeford, after she called him a bully and told him to leave her alone.

Steven Archer pleaded guilty to using threatening, abusive, insulting words or behaviour likely to cause fear or provoke unlawful violence when he appeared at Bridlington Magistrates Court last Wednesday.

Prosecutor Jayne Wilson told the court that just after midday on January 7, Stacy Archer collected her brother, Steven, from his home and was taking him to visit his mother.

But once he got into the car, Ms Archer realised her brother had been drinking, they started arguing, and she stopped the car.

Mrs Wilson said Ms Archer asked her brother to get out of the car but he refused, prompting her to call her mother.

“When the car was stationary, the defendant is said to have started to become abusive. He was running around the car in pursuit of his sister,” Mrs Wilson said.

The court heard that the manager of a fish and chip shop, on the opposite side of the road, described Archer’s behaviour as abusive and aggressive.

The shop manager shouted across the road “leave her alone, you bully.”

“The defendant replied by shouting words such as ‘what has it got to f******* do with you. The witness was in fear that he may cross the road and offer violence,” Mrs Wilson added.

Richard Fowler, mitigating said: “The defendant and his sister were involved in what could be described as a brotherly-sisterly argument which escalated out of hand.”

“There has been a reconciliation, there has been a calming down from both sides, and family relations are a lot better,” Mr Fowler added.

Mr Fowler said Archer never moved towards the shop manager nor did he intend to cross over the road.

Presiding magistrate Robin Sunley said: “It’s quite alarming for people in the street to hear foul language and to be gesticulated at.”

Archer was fined £100, and ordered to pay court costs of £85 as well as a victim surcharge of £15.
