SKIDBY WINDMILL MAZE
As part of the Museum's programme of developing the one-acre field at Skidby Windmill to promote healthy enjoyment of the countryside and enhance its wildlife appeal, the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust has completed work on a traditional chalk maze there.
The maze pattern is based on one in Chartres Cathedral, in France, although there are many other patterns found in different places across Europe.
In this region, there is the turf maze at Alkborough, in north Lincolnshire, known as 'Julian's Bower', which is thought to be of medieval origin.
Medieval monks used the paths of the maze to focus their thoughts away from worldly matters towards quiet contemplation, reflection and prayer.
At the Skidby maze, visitors can use the maze in the same way - the recommended time for walking the maze to the centre and back is five minutes minimum!
As well as the new maze, the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust has added a second, larger tunnel of living willow, which not only provides an exciting place for children to play, but is also a habitat for birds, butterflies and other wildlife.
Entrance to the field is via the footpath from the lay-by carpark, or through the mill garden.
Explorasacks can be borrowed from the museum reception for families to take round the field - they contain observation sheets and equipment to spot and record plants, birds and butterflies in the field and wildlife garden at the side of the mill.
There is a 5 deposit, returnable with the sack.
Entrance to the mill field and wildlife garden is free.
Entrance to the Mill (tower and museum) is 1.50 (adults), 80p (concessions) and 50p (children)- under-fives free. The mill is open daily, 10am-5pm (last admission 4.15pm).
