The NHS in Yorkshire and the Humber – fit for the 21st century
A Health Minister has congratulated NHS Yorkshire and the Humber on the changes being made to offer patients health services fit for the 21st centuary.
A year on from the launch of their 'Healthy Ambitions' plan, the NHS in Yorkshire and the Humber are highlighting the progress that has already been made in improving services to make sure the NHS offers local people the best health and healthcare.
Lord Darzi, a surgeon and health minister who heads the review nationally, has written to one scheme in our region praising the progress being made twelve months after the publication of the ambitious 10 year strategy. His proposals, revealed today in his one year on report, High Quality Care for All: Our Journey so Far, include plans to scrap some centrally driven targets and proposals for giving doctors and nurses control of their budgets.
Lord Darzi said: "Since we set out on our journey a year ago, I am delighted that such substantial progress has been made and that real improvements have been delivered across the country for NHS patients and staff. We have laid solid foundations.
"Quality is what we aspire to and innovation is how we achieve it. The progress made since last year in the quality provided to patients and the safety of their care was not driven through top-down targets but by giving responsibility to the staff at local level.
"The fantastic progress made since the publication of my report last year and the commitment we are making to continuing this will mean that our focus on quality will deliver a health service that meets the expectations of NHS patients, the aspirations of NHS staff and value for money for taxpayers."
The original report, drawn up by over 150 doctors, nurses and GPs from every area of our region provided a vision of how the NHS needed to change to be fit for the 21st century. Since then doctors and managers have been working together to make the recommendations real.
All 14 primary care trusts in the region have incorporated these improvements in their strategic plans and as a result changes are being taken forward at a great pace.
Healthy Ambitions is a 10 year strategy that will deliver:
Healthier lifestyles – with a halt in the rise in obesity
Saving 600 premature deaths every year with better stroke care
Rising breastfeeding rates – with reduced variation across the region
Halving the number of children admitted to hospital with asthma
Mental health services available without waiting
Half the number of preventable admissions from diabetes
Experienced staff making decisions at the front door of every hospital and beyond for acute care
Double the number of people dying at home rather than hospital
Professor Chris Welsh, NHS Yorkshire and the Humber Medical Director, said:
"It's fantastic to receive recognition from Lord Darzi for the good work going on in our region.
"The progress we have made in Yorkshire and the Humber over this last year has been very encouraging and credit must go to all members of staff working tirelessly to improve services for patients.
"The recommendations in Healthy Ambitions were made by doctors, nurses and other front line health professionals, and it is great to see patients beginning to benefit from some of these changes.
"Healthy Ambitions is a ten year plan and the work has only just begun."
