Time to dust down Driff!

Driffield is to be given a spring clean as part of a new multi-agency campaign that has been launched to tidy up the town.

Driffield Town Council, Driffield Partnership and Driffield in Bloom have teamed up to launch ‘Operation Clean Up - Dusting Down Driffield’ - a campaign to encourage businesses and residents to do their bit to rid the rubbish, weed out the weeds and sweep the side walks.

Mayor of Driffield Councillor Joyce Fletcher said: “The complaints about littering is something that is brought to our attention on a daily basis, despite various measures to try to reduce the problem, it is now time to be more pro-active and appeal to the community to get involved, join our campaign, and take positive action.”

The idea for the campaign was born after Driffield in Bloom approached the Town Council last November concerned about the growing problem of litter blighting the streets.

As previously reported in the Driffield Times & Post members of Driffield In Bloom had been forced to clean up syringes, cigarette butts and fast food packaging in their quest to try and keep the town tidy.

And the problem had got so bad the committee decided not to put the town forward for the 2012 Yorkshire in Bloom competition.

But the launch of the campaign has been welcomed by the committee who hope it will make a real difference.

Shirley Franklin, chair of the Driffield in Bloom committee said: “We know that people care about how the town looks and we hope that this campaign will encourage those who really want to make a difference to get involved.”

A get together will be held at Cass Hall, King Street on Wednesday February 29 from 7pm to 9pm for volunteers to meet the organisers as well as waste disposal and recycling experts who can answer all concerns or queries about this community self help project.

And groups of volunteers will be hitting the streets on Saturday April 14 to give the town a spring clean.

This will include litter picking, clearing footpaths, tidying flower beds as well as chatting to residents and traders to see how they too can get involved.

Councillor Symon Fraser, Chair of the Driffield Partnership said: “It is hoped that this will be the first of many Dusting Downs around Driffeld, and that with the onset of Spring Operation Clean Up will make the town a cleaner place to live, work and visit”.
