Tributes paid to businessman, 35

TRIBUTES have been paid at home and abroad this week to a well-known businessman from the Driffield area who has died suddenly, aged 35.

Family, friends and former colleagues gathered yesterday, Tuesday, for the funeral of Terry Dixon, who died earlier this month.

His father Nick said the family were struggling to come to terms with their loss.

But he added: "We want to celebrate his life, his achievements and what he rose to become."

Terry died in the early hours of Monday, August 16, having undergone an operation on his ankle the previous day after being found injured in London's King's Cross railway station.

Nick said his son had endured health difficulties over the past two years, but that the news of his death had still been a big shock to the family.

"You don't expect it, obviously. He had a few problems in the last couple of years.

A former pupil of Wetwang Primary and Pocklington Schools, Terry earned a place at Selwyn College, Cambridge, where he read Japanese.

He worked for JP Morgan in Tokyo, where he was recognised as top fund manager in Japan and became the youngest person ever to be appointed as a managing director for the company.

He also regularly appeared on television channels including NBC as a Tokyo business expert.

Nick said the family had received many messages of sympathy from his colleagues, some of whom had also travelled to East Yorkshire to attend the funeral.

Terry's loss has also been keenly felt by his former team-mates at the YC and AC Rugby Club in Yokohama, where he was captain during the 2006-7 season.

In a tribute posted on the club's website, president Simon Litster said black armbands would be worn and a minute's silence observed in his memory ahead of their match against Korean University this weekend.

The club also plan to dedicate a trophy in his memory.

Mr Litster said: "Terry was incredibly kind hearted. Having been assisted with work and accomodation in his early Tokyo days, he paid it forward in spades.

"More than a few new arrivals in town were provided for with a room at Terry's for a few nights and in some cases many months. He was happy to help any of the rugby lads."
