Fish n Chip shop Harpers in Wetwang has been named as the best in East Yorkshire for its chips.

Loyal customers voted in their masses to batter rivals from some of East Yorkshire’s top chippies, ensuring their perfectly cooked portions were crowned number one in the best chippy chips section.

The Choice Chip Awards, run by the Potato Council in recognition of Chip Week 2014, which runs until 23 February, reward the tastiest chips being served across the UK.

This year saw more than 840 chip shops enter to compete to be named champion across ten regions in the UK, by a record number of 62,983 chip-loving Brits.Caroline Evans at Potato Council, said: “Britain is truly a nation of chip lovers and Chip Week is a fantastic celebration of our great food tradition. It’s no surprise so many voted in the Choice Chip Awards this year – the British public feel very strongly about their local chippy and are prepared to take the trouble to vote to put their favourite on the map.”

“This has been a great start to Chip Week 2014, which will go on to see chip-themed festivities take place in shops, pubs, restaurants and retail outlets across the country.”

More than 1.6 million tonnes of potatoes are made into chips every year in the UK – weighing the same as over 14,000 blue whales or 4,000 jumbo jets..

The land required to grow potatoes for chips is 33,664 hectares – big enough to fit London’s Hyde Park 237 times, or 47,000 Wembley football pitches.

A survey of 1,000 adults shows ‘chip shop chips’ are the nation’s favourite chips with nearly half (45%) of all respondents putting them first, followed by French fries (16%), oven chips (14%), potato wedges (8%) crinkle cut chips (7%) and curly fries (7%).

The survey also shows that where we live affects our chip choices, with people in the South preferring salt and vinegar on their portion while the Scottish are more likely than people in any other region to choose a portion of curly fries. People in the Midlands have a fondness for curry sauce and cheese with their portion; the Welsh are more likely than other regions to eat their chips straight from the oven; and a quarter of Londoners favour the French fry.
