Wetwang pensioner gets ten year ASBO
Christopher Perry
A PENSIONER has been given an Anti-social Behaviour Order for the next 10 years after a judge ruled that the public needed protecting from him.
Christopher Perry, 66, of Southfield Close, Wetwang today (January 20) appeared before Judge Fred Rutherford at Hull Magistrates Court to fight an ASBO application made by Humberside Police.
The action was brought after complaints were made to police by several key members of the community, including former Driffield mayor and current town councillor Steve Poessl, former Driffield Police Inspector Richard Wood and the Reverend Robert Amos.
The complaints referred to postings made by Perry on his own website, Wolds Eye View, phone calls he made, and photographs that were taken and posted online.
Despite Perry’s barrister, Brigid Baillie, putting forward an argument for the freedom of expression under article 10 of the European convention of human rights Judge Rutherford said: “It’s a nonsense to try to hide appalling actions behind article 10 and I have in mind within that ruling the protection of the rights of others from such obvious anti-social behaviour.”
Speaking after the full day hearing Perry, who claims to have extensive experience of journalism and local government, said the order had effectively “gagged” him and he will now consult with his barrister about the possibility of pursuing a judicial review.
