After a chance meeting whilst on holiday, York Jewellery Designer, Jo Bagshaw was commissioned to create a range of silver jewellery for emerging contemporary folk singer Lisbee Stainton.
Lisbee, who will be playing at the City Screen Basement Bar in York as part of her current UK tour on 15th March, will use this venue to launch the range of innovative, new merchandise.
Jo and Lisbee have been working closely together to produce the jewellery which is based around Lisbee’s distinctive, award winning logo. Jo has sourced input locally from the York based arts community to create the work and says, “I am very excited about this new collection & enjoyed working with other local businesses to produce the pieces”.
Jo Bagshaw is well known figure in the York art and craft scene, an established jewellery designer who is based in Heslington, she is perhaps best known for having designed and hand making the Miss York crown in 2005, which was presented to Georgia Horsley.
The Lisbee story began when Jo was on a touring holiday in a rather wet Wales last year. Parking her VW campervan next to a motorhome in the scenic Aberaeron she began swapping wet weather tales with her fellow campers. The neighbouring couple related the story behind their much larger motorhome which had been used by their musician daughter whilst supporting Joan Armatrading on a European tour.
“We arranged to meet up again” says Jo, “as my own route took me very close to their home near Abergavenny”. It was at this further meeting in a local pub that Jo was asked if she would be interested in designing a range of jewellery for Lisbee.
“Merchandise in the music world tends to follow a well worn path of T-shirts, posters and mugs so it was intriguing that Lisbee and her parents wished to explore a totally different angle with something more individual that would reflect Lisbee’s style”. Lisbee is also an artist and plays a central role in brand design, having created the artwork for her album. Jo and Lisbee met up at the Sage in Gateshead when Lisbee was touring with Seth Lakeman.
Jo also teaches jewellery making skills at The Mount School in York and is working on own range of jewellery in preparation for a number of exhibitions that will take place in and around York during 2013.
