A funeral service was held at the East Riding Crematorium on Wednesday, 3 April for Mr Raymond Seward of Eastgate, Nafferton who died in the Hull Royal Infirmary on 21 March. He was aged 74 years.

The service was conducted by the Rev John Gaughan

Raymond was born in York on 1st July, 1938 and also lived in Haxby and Wigginton with his parents Rose & Frank Seward. He was a choir boy at York Minster in the late forties, early fifties and also at the chapel next to the Minster, Michael-le-Belfrey. Ray moved with his parents to Nafferton when he was 12 when they took on the job of caretakers at the Methodist Chapel living in a cottage up the chapel side.

Ray attended Nafferton school. He was a keen footballer and played for the Nafferton team. After leaving school he went to work for Johnsons Bakery in Driffield as a bakehouse assistant. He then went to work for William Pudsey, helping in the coal yard. He also worked for Rudd’s and Thirsk’s Mill for many years and at Wold Farm, Nafferton where he learned how to milk a cow by hand. He was a ground worker for many building firms around East Yorkshire, he was a good worker and worked hard all his life.

Ray played darts and dominoes for the Kings Head Pub in Nafferton and it was there he met his wife to be Christine when she was cheering him on to win the match. They met in March, 1966 and married in July of the same year and would have been married for 47 years this year. They went on to have three beautiful children, Gary, Jeanette & Julie, later 9 grandchildren Martin, Cameron, Daryle, Larissa, Ellie, Chantelle, Abbey, Naomi and the late Michael who sadly died three years ago and later two great grandchildren Jacob and Keira.

Ray loved gardening and like keeping his garden lovely, growing vegetables and flowers and helping others as well in their gardens. He enjoyed his trips to the Falcon on a Monday for a drink with his mates, especially Foxy.

Ray was a very placid, laid back man and very easy to get along with, he will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
