Filey incident: Man confirmed dead after car goes over cliff near Blue Dolphin holiday park

A man has died after a car went over a cliff near a well-known holiday park on the Yorkshire coast.

Police, fire crews, the ambulance service and the Coastguard and RNLI were all called to the scene near the Blue Dolphin holiday park near Filey on Tuesday (Oct 18). Officers were called to reports that a car had gone over the cliff and onto the rocks below at 1.34pm.

North Yorkshire Police said: “We can now confirm that sadly, a man, who was the only occupant of the vehicle that went over the cliff near Filey died. His family have been informed, however, we are not yet in a position to release his identity. Police investigators remain at the scene of the incident to examine the scene and establish the circumstances. A multi-agency operation is in place to arrange for the recovery the vehicle from the base of the cliffs.”

A spokesperson for Filey RNLI said the station’s B Class Atlantic 85 and D Class inshore lifeboat were launched to the scene at 1.42pm after receiving an alert just eight minutes earlier. Yorkshire Ambulance Service said an ambulance, rapid response vehicle and air ambulance were all dispatched to the crash.

Investigating officers remained at the scene for most of the day to examine the area and establish what led to the car going over the cliff as well as arranging the recovery of the vehicle from the base of the cliffs.
