Scarborough gallery to display Ukrainian community-based art, photos and literacy work

A Scarborough gallery is to display a Ukrainian-based photographic, art and literacy project, Show Scarborough 2023!

People taking part from the Ukrainian community in Scarborough and their supporters, working in teams, are exploring the theme of ‘Light’ using cameras and imagination to produce images in words and pictures for a public display in Gallery 6, Victoria Road, from January 23 to 28.

Project co-ordinator, David Lewis of Bryn Stowe Publications of Scarborough, said: “The project started on January 7 with an enrolment day at Gallery 6, aimed at giving a few moments of fun to shed some light in these dark times.

the need is as great as ever.

"This small impactive project seemed a great way of doing it.

"The response was inspiring and the display at the gallery will show 36 images, writing, and other art contributions from the 12 teams and nearly 40 people involved.

"Entry to the exhibition is free but the visitors are asked to engage by voting for their favourite images, the best entries being awarded cash prizes to help ease their situation back home.

"We are hoping the exhibition will help to inspire hope and keep the light of peace and democracy alive.”

Bryn Stowe Publications is funding the project with some key sponsors – its Ukrainian support project in 2022, Hoggy’s Fund, has so far raised nearly

£4,000 and helped nearly 40 people in Ukraine.

This is their next project of much-needed support for the Ukrainian community.
