AN agricultural student from Driffield has been rubbing shoulders with celebrities after scooping a top learning and skills award.
Despite battling problems with literacy and numeracy Sarah Cobb, 20, saw off competition from 250 nominees to win the agriculture award as part of this year's Celebration of Learning and Skills Awards Yorkshire and Humber (CoLas).
Sarah, who is currently studying Agriculture at Aberystwyth University, said she was thrilled to receive the award.
"It means so much, it's brilliant! I didn't quite realise my chances of winning until I was one of the few to be shortlisted. I am still lost for words. It's really amazing and I am very proud. I couldn't have done it without the support of my friends and family," she said.
Despite poor GCSE results Sarah successfully completed a National Certificate in Agriculture at Bishop Burton College, in Beverley with merit and went on to complete the National Diploma in Agriculture.
Sarah has also under taken various additional industry qualifications including forklift, farm welding, repair and safe use of veterinary medicines and has represented the college at the UK Skills competition.
While working as part of a small team of students Sarah has also earned the Driffield Agricultural Society trophy for best final year case study.
Sarah added: "The NCA was really worthwhile and the opportunity to go to the UK Skills competition and then to win a CoLaS award have been a real boost to my confidence and desire to continue learning."
The CoLas were presented by television presenter Fearne Cotton at a star studded awards ceremony held at the Harrogate International Centre.
Sportsmen Scott Quinell and Steve Black also attended the ceremony alongside more than 1000 of the region's business leaders, employers and education representatives.
