ALBAQAA came through late to reward connections in the feature contest of Beverley's second race meeting of 2008 yesterday, Thursday.
The 15/8 favourite was hampered just over a furlong from home in the Dadie's Birthday Celebrations Handicap, but recovered to land the first prize of just under seven thousand pounds, two lengths ahead of Toto Skyllachy.
It was a successful aftern
oon for the Westwood punters with three favourites and a joint market leader all obliging.
Most eye-catching among them was Karmest, who justified 3-1 favouritism by storming home to a five length success in the mile and a quarter fillies handicap.
Duke of Touraine had earlier set the ball rolling by holding off Highland Love in the three year old contest over the same distance.
And former champion jockey Jamie Spencer enjoyed one of his two rides during the afternoon, as 2-1 joint favourite Hepburn Bell claimed the money for trainer James Fanshawe in the Constant Security Maiden Stakes.
Middleham-based handler Mark Johnston also enjoyed some success when Greyfriars Abbey claimed the closing mile and a half handicap.
But the big names certainly didn't have it all their own way as Dispol Diva came home clear in the opening two year old claimer under Jamie Moriarty.
And another claiming rider, Michael J Snainton, also enjoyed a winner as Moonstreaker came home first in the Norfolk Street Handicap over seven and a half furlongs.
