ULTRA runner Neil Ridsdale defied pain to gain a top place in one of the great traditional British endurance events.
Eleventh out of 346 was Driffield Strider Neil's reward for finishing the 62 mile Fellsman on the hottest weekend of the year.

He was second in the over 50 category and won the overall team prize, in which he was grouped with West Yorkshire athletes Adrian Dixon and Stuart Thompson.

Held in the Yorkshire Dales, the Fellsman involves 11,000 feet of climbing. So severe were the conditions, with temperatures touching the 80s - that 113 dropped out. Neil, who lives in Kilham, finished in 14 hours 20 minutes.

"The heat was intense and it was windless, with a lot of heather bashing and bog jumping," he said.

The Fellsman completed a quickfire hat-trick for Neil - last week he won the 26 mile Falcon Flyer at Ravenscar and the previous week was joint first in the 50 mile Woldsman.

Neil was this week back at work as a coalman, nursing a batch of blisters in readiness for Striders' annual Mucky Duck race on Sunday.
