Welcome pool fans to the first write up of the 2008/09 season for the North Wolds Pool League. May we just say big thanks this week for the speedy response in handing your results in, keep up the good work.
So it’s onto the important first week, and with all teams eager to make a good start to their campaign, let’s see how they got on.

A League

Back in the style they finished last season, a superb performance by the old hands of Buck A, only dropp
ing one frame to cruise past Spread Eagle B, a nice welcome for the old Red Lion team recently promoted, hope things can get better for these boys.

Again hot on Buck’s heels are the usual pretenders Tiger B who, after finishing the last league in a very creditable third place, roared past the Rose and Crown Driffield 7-2, determined to repeat or even better their position last year.

In joint second it’s no surprise to see Spread Eagle A. Jamie’s team got a better start to this year then last, having a comfortable win at home to Buck B, winning 7–2.

Bay Horse A were at home to newly promoted Royal Oak B, who seem not to have relished this trip, on the end of a 7 – 2 defeat, a good start to Horse’s fight for the title this year.

The last two results in this division were very close affairs, Robin Hood Middleton going down narrowly 4-5 at Ian’s Cricket Club A, while Bay Horse Kilham A were 3-3 with Mariners A after the singles but won the first two pairs and the tie 5-4.

B League

Well, if the start is anything to go by, what a league we could have in prospect here, with only a single point separating the top six teams!

In joint first place are Mariners B, looking forward to better success after their stint in League A last season, taking the singles 5-1 against Bay Horse Kilham B and going on to win 6 – 3, an assured performance.

The other joint leader is Norseman A, who after a close set of singles finished 3-3, rallied to win the remaining 3 games against Tiger A.

The other matches were all close. White Horse A, playing host to Bluebell A were held initially to 3-3, but Bluebell were just edged out in the first of the two pairs.

Station Buffet B, playing in only their second season in the league, set off with a good win at home to Bay Horse B Driffield. Again it was 3-3 after the singles but a good 5-4 win for Buffet by the end. Rather ironically there is nothing to split the A and B teams of the Ship Inn, both having good 5– 4 wins this week, Ship A beating off the challenge of Rose and Crown L D A after lying 3-3 to claim the win in the doubles. Their B team enjoyed success at Star Inn B after dominating the singles 4-2, going on to win 5-4.
