Division Three

On a calm dry Saturday afternoon the promotion-seeking Spiders took the short journey to Allotment Lane for an encounter with the league’s bottom team, Driffield Star. But with everything to play for, Spiders knew tha
t they couldn’t be complacent and had to go into this game with all guns blazing- which is exactly what Spiders did as, right from the off, they had Star under immense pressure.

Star’s tactics of putting 10 men in their own box and throwing themselves at everything, worked effectively and Spiders found themselves dominating the game but with no end product.

This was to be the pattern for the first 35 minutes of the opening half until the impressive Josh Hopper struck home from 12 yards to give Spiders the lead.

With Hopper and Harewood both impressing down the flanks and Steve Harrison having a cracking afternoon getting forward from left back, Spiders were creating chance after chance but failed to convert the chances they were given.

Spiders continued to play some lovely looking football in the second half but couldn’t capitalise on their domination. But it was clearly only going to be a matter of time before Spiders put the game to bed and they should have done this on 60 minutes when Darling uncharacteristically squandered a glorious chance from six yards.

Finally, in the 65th minute, Spiders did virtually wrap things up when a cross from Sowersby was turned into his own goal by an unfortunate Star defender.

Spiders saw out the rest of the game comfortably to take all three points, though all credit goes to Star for their efforts and determination to fight right until the last minute.

It was after the game when the celebrations truly began as news of Langtoft’s shock defeat filtered through. There was a mixture of joy and disbelief that Spiders had now secured a place in Division 2 next season.

It is a thoroughly deserved reward for the Spiders who have given everything and will continue to do so till the end of the season. The main priority now for Spiders will be to get their hands on the league title and the cup - and, playing football like this, they have every chance of lifting the double.
