Duncan is going for gold again

North Wolds Lions are once again sponsoring Octon swimming star Duncan Burdass,(41), who will be 'going for gold' at the Special Olympics 8th National Summer Games, being held in Leicester from July 25 - 31.

This will be the fifth time that the North Wolds Lions have very generously supported Duncan, and he hopes to reward them by winning yet more medals to add to his already impressive collection.

Duncan is a member of the City of Hull SO Swimming Group and, along with five other members from the group, will be part of the Yorkshire and Humberside team of 215 athletes competing in athletics, gymnastics, cycling tennis, boccia, power lifting, ten pin bowling, carpet and indoor bowls, equestrian and football. The team will be supported by 91 volunteer coaches and escorts.

Duncan competed in his first national games way back in 1991 in Wolverhampton, and has since competed in the last four national Summer Games in Sheffield, Portsmouth, Cardiff and Glasgow.

In 1999 he was selected to represent Great Britain in the Special Olympics World Games in North Carolina in the USA, where he won two golds and one silver medal.

Duncan trains regularly in Hull with the City of Hull Group and he also has a training session at The Bell Fitness Centre in Driffield. Each year Duncan also successfully competes in swimming galas around the country.

This is the second time Leicester have hosted the National Games - they previously held them in 1999 - and they are expecting to attract over 3,000 athletes, all with learning disabilities, together with 1,200 coaches, 1,500 volunteers and at least 8,000 parents, carers, supporters and friends from 19 regions throughout Great Britain.

Over the eight days the athletes will compete in 21 sports at 21 venues in and around Leicester.
