EI skipper seals derby victory
Football ps1204-12 Driffield EI v Driffield FC
Driffield EI view
DRIFFIELD EI completed a league double over Driffield FC on Saturday with a comfortable 3-1 win, despite giving FC hope late on.
Following the first meeting between the two sides, when EI were slightly fortunate to take maximum points, this was a completely different game as EI controlled the game from start to finish.
And had it not been for FC keeper Mark Briggs EI could have had seven or eight, as the shot-stopper was man of the match making several superb saves.
After going close through a Dan Taylor header and a Spencer Tate drive, EI finally broke the deadlock when Mark Davies finished off the move of the match, sweeping home Tate’s fine cross after he was played in by the outstanding Darren Gladstone.

And it should have been two minutes later, Tate finding himself with just Briggs to beat but he lifted his shot just over the bar.
FC did have a couple of openings, with keeper Grant Haler brilliantly denying Rich Gladstone, and saving another effort from 12 yards.
But overall he was well protected by the superb back three of Darren Gladstone, Dan Taylor – who picked up a rare booking – and Tom Ullyott. Steve Skinns was superb in front of these three with Matthew Jarvis and Shane Johnson bossing the midfield.
At the break EI could have been three up, but knew they needed that next goal to ease the pressure. And it came via the excellent Dale Darling, who rounded Briggs to finish well.
After this Darling was twice denied brilliantly by Briggs, while he also tipped Mark Thompson’s drive on to the post. He then somehow gathered the ball on the line as skipper Thompson looked nailed on to score.
With 10 minutes left Johnson was red carded and minutes later Davies followed him off when he questioned the referee’s decision to award FC a penalty, which Chris Eyre scored to make it 2-1.
It looked set for a tense few minutes, but EI restored their two-goal advantage when Thompson took advantage of a slip to score a well deserved goal after another good game up top.
Overall a good game of football between the town’s leading two sides, in front of well over 60 spectators.
EI are back on the road this week when they have a tough game at second-placed Bransholme.
Thanks to EI main sponsors Dodds Solar, B & F Potatoes and J Scott Engineering Ltd.
Thanks also to the Mariners Arms for the excellent after match refreshments.
Driffield FC view
FC travelled to local rivals Driffield EI with a point to prove following their last encounter with EI where FC lost at home 1-0 in a game which they should have won at a canter.
On a great day for local football the two best teams in the town went head to head, with FC looking to get three points on the board and also have the bragging rights in the town.
The first half began with an attack minded FC looking to utilize the wings, however EI started the better of the two teams and took control of the midfield with both Kitching and Sowersby struggling to get in to the game.
With only 15 minutes of the game FC created the best chance with Eyres picking the ball up and switching the ball to the right wing, with this Gladstone picked the ball up and raced in the area however he could not beat the EI keeper keeping the score all square.
This gave EI a scare and only minutes later as FC pushed for the opening goal, EI used the counter attack down the right with nice ball to the back post leaving an easy finish in to an empty net giving Briggs in the FC goal no chance putting EI one up.
FC changed their formation with Blakeston being given a free role and FC looked more dangerous going forward however they could not penetrate the well organised defence of EI before the halftime whistle.
The second half began and only ten minutes in to the second half a well-timed ball from the midfield sent the EI forward racing away to round the stranded Briggs in the FC goal to give EI the two goal cushion that they fully deserved.
It wasn’t long until the tackles started to fly in and on 70 minutes Liam Sowersby turned his marker in the box to be brought down in the area, FC clawed a goal back with Club captain Chris Eyre neatly putting away the resulting penalty.
Within the next five minutes EI were down to nine men, the first sending off being a stupid off the ball incident by the EI midfielder, the second sending off being foul language aimed at the referee.
This spurred FC on and they looked the better of the two teams however they just weren’t getting the rub of the green in front of goal, with FC pushing and again changing formation to look for that all important equaliser EI used the break to their advantage. Then after a communication error between Briggs and Marcus Sowersby the loose ball was met by the EI forward to put the game out of reach of FC to make the score 3-1.
