ei take points in big derby
Football ps1204-12c Driffield EI v Driffield FC
DRIFFIELD EI completed a Humber Premier League double over Driffield FC on Saturday as they deservedly took the points at Driffield School.
EI should have had the game wrapped up before they had two players sent off and FC pulled a goal back from the penalty spot to set up what could have been an exciting last few minutes, only for FC to gift EI a third.
After being two up through Mark Davies and Dale Darling, EI were very comfortable and had it not been for keeper Mark Briggs it could have been six or seven.
But with 10 minutes left EI had Shane Johnson sent off and minutes later Davies as he contested the penalty awarded to FC. Chris Eyre making no mistake from the spot to make it 2-1.
It now looked like FC would push for an equaliser and then possibly a winner, but EI dug deep and after a misunderstanding by the keeper and full back EI skipper Mark Thompson was presented with a gift to seal the points for his team.
Driffield EI manager, Dave Lawson, said: “This was a typical local derby, with both teams determined to stop each other playing football and consequently the first half was limited to one clear chance that fortunately fell to us and gave us a 1-0 lead.
“The second half started in a similar pattern but as the game went on I thought our fitness gave us the advantage and we started to create chance after chance, but we were denied increasing our lead by the in form FC keeper.
“In the end we came a way with a 3-1 victory and I was very pleased with the overall work rate, attitude and commitment of every one of the EI squad – they never stopped working for each other over the full 90 minutes.
“Despite us having two players booked and two sent off, this game was played in the correct spirit and was a credit to both sets of players.”
FC manager Martyn Stannard said: “In all fairness we didn’t play to our best ability, however on another day we could have got something from this game.
“Unfortunately we have to accept that we were second best across many areas of the pitch.
“The lads need to keep their heads up however, as I am sure we will return in the not too distant future to show EI what we are capable of.”
The game was a good advert for football in Driffield, as EI made it back-to-back league wins. FC will look to get the game quickly out of their system when they travel to Withernsea for a County Cup quarter-final on Saturday. EI travel to play second-placed Bransholme Athletic in a league fixture.
