Late goals seal win
Father Son ps1203-3 Father and Son Play in Same Team Guy Deverson, Jack Oxlade
Driffield EI welcomed Bridlington Seabirds to Driffield School hoping to put last week’s disappointing display firmly behind them and secure their first victory in the newly formatted Don Bemrose Cup.
Manager Deverson introduced his step son, 16-year-old Jack Oxlade to the side who was making his debut in men’s football and welcomed back Grice, Kirby and Russ Robinson to the starting eleven.
EI started well with Robinson and Kilner looking dangerous down the flanks linking up well with the central midfield duo of skipper Dixon and Grice. Against the run of play Seabirds took the lead. Young Oxlade clearly had his shirt pulled back by a forward who continued running in at goal, Harrison made a fine save but the rebound was turned in from close range.
EI responded well and forced a series of corners. They deservedly equalised from a Kilner corner, Deverson heading powerfully home from 12 yards. Rossi and Kirby were using their physical presence to unsettle the Seabirds back four. Robinson was terrorising the left back with his blistering pace but EI failed to take advantage of some good goal scoring opportunities. They were made to pay when Seabirds scored a fortuitous goal. Smith and Fraser closed down the right winger and when he was tackled the ball ricocheted over the stranded Harrison to give Seabirds the lead again.
On the stroke of half time EI were awarded an indirect free kick six yards from goal when Kirby was obstructed. Dixon rolled the ball to Deverson who squared for Rossi to place his shot through a crowd of players on the goalline and the ball went in off the post.

The second half continued in the same vein with EI pressing forward at every opportunity. Scott Darling and Fowler were brought on to replace young Oxlade and Kirby with Robinson going up front to utilise his pace. EI took the lead for the first time on the hour, Dixon’s speculative long range effort was saved by the feet of the keeper and when he went to pick the ball up Robinson reacted quickest and slid the ball home from close range.
Grice was outstanding in the heart of midfield supporting both his defence and forwards. Seabirds equalised again with 20 minutes to go, Deverson’s pass was intercepted and then two superb flicks by different Seabirds players saw the ball find an oncoming midfielder to fire home from the edge of the box. It was a goal of real quality.
The game was then halted for over half an hour as young Scott Darling unfortunately injured his ankle and an ambulance had to be called. There was only 13 minutes left but both teams agreed to continue after the stoppage.
Dale Darling replaced his brother and scored with his first touch running on to Rossi’s flick but the referee adjudged him to have handled. Fowler and Kilner were superb along the left and when Kilner got fouled near the touchline there appeared to be little on. Up stepped Darling to curl a free kick from 35 yards into the top corner to give EI the lead again. Smith was marshalling the back four well as EI tried to see the remaining few minutes out.
However EI were not content to let the game peter out and scored again with two minutes left. Fowler fed Deverson in the box, he in turn played in Robinson who squared for Dixon to control the ball before slamming his shot past the helpless keeper.
Manager Deverson was pleased with his side’s display, saying: “This was a great response to last week’s display. There were some fine individual performances, in particular Robinson and Grice. Everyone at the club wishes Scott a speedy recovery.
“On a personal note it was a special day for me. One of my lifetime’s ambitions was to play in the same team as Jack and today I’ve obviously fulfilled this ambition. He played well and we won the game too.”
