Seconds hang on for narrow win
Rugby ps1205-15b Driffield 2nds v Ionians
The second team, after a very close and disappointing loss up at Wharfedale the week before, were back at home against a strong Ionians second team, populated by a number of first XV players.
It was a good day for rugby and both sides will have felt confident going into the game. Tom Wright was back from a hand injury that has kept him off the pitch a month or so. A few call-ups to the first team due to injuries meant that Chris Chapman came straight back in after missing last week.
Driffield started off the stronger team, having the forwards try to dominate the pace and tempo of the game and trying to get the edge of a possibly unfamiliar Ionians team. This worked well with Cooper, Chapman and Pettinger taking good ball up into the back line. Ionians however were the first on the board when miscommunication in the defensive line let Ionians get a try out on the wing.
Driffield replied with a try from Chapman, who picked up and went from the base of the scrum and did well to force himself over the line from five metres out. Then Chris Sadler, who had a consistent-as-ever game, scythed through the Ionians’ back line to score a great try.
The half-time score was 14-10 to Ionians.

The second half was played out much like the first, with both the backs and forwards attacking hard. However, a few missed first-up tackles, missed opportunities and some poor defensive work from all meant the game became a bit of a ‘shootout’ with I’s having some good attacking weapons in the backs.
Further tries came from John Williams, scoring from the back of a rolling maul off a well taken lineout, and Jem Harrison, who shod his zimmer frame to score a try from a pick up at the back of a ruck. Sam Moore made the most of an audacious ‘show and go’, and Rob McGill showed his pace to round out the Driffield scoring, meant the final three minutes would have to be played out at 32-26 to have a memorable win.
However, Ionians had different plans and a turnover in their own half and a mad scramble to score up the wing meant they had a chance to kick a conversion to win the match. The kick was missed and a well-deserved win for the 2nd’s was complete.
This was a very well deserved team performance from one to 15 for the whole 80 minutes, with set-pieces working very well and some great link-up play and attacking rugby seen from the backs.
Special mention to man of the match Dale Wilson.
