A series of photographs taken in London and Rome has helped a Kilham photographer win international recognition.

David Ireland, 61, has been awarded the after submitting a series of photographs along the theme of “have and have not.”

“For the ‘have not’ photos I captured the homeless and beggars in their everyday plight for survival on the city streets,” said David.

“Whilst the ‘haves’ looked on into very expensive shop windows such as Gucci, Eleuteri, and Cartier while considering their next expensive purchase.”

The distinction of licentiate is internationally respected and sought-after by professional and amateur photographers alike.

David, who works as a self-employed electrical engineer, is a member of Driffield Photographic Society and spent four years studying for a BTEC Higher National Certificate in Photography at Grimsby College when he lived at Barton-on-Humber.

He added: “My favourite image for this assignment is taken in Rome and shows a beggar sitting in the doorway of a very large church.

“When I took it I liked the idea of the large flight of stairs leading to him and the large church with its huge door and the poor beggar in the doorway which dwarfed the objects and the people around it. The icing on the cake was when the two ladies came out of the doorway.

David has now urged other photographers in the area join the Driffield Photographic Society, for which he has been internal competition secretary for the past four years.

He added: “The aim of the club is to promote all aspects of photography from photographers within the community and to provide a facility for local photographers to show their work.

“I myself have picked up a great deal of knowledge and experience since joining the club back in 2009.

“It’s not just about pointing and shooting, it’s about having contextual awareness of the pictures and making a statement.”

The society, which was founded in 1950, can be contacted via the clubs web site at www.driffieldphotographicsociety.co.uk
